Meet Stewie the Mini Weenie
Stewie is a 4 and a half year old smooth-haired miniature dachshund! He’s currently living his best life in Paris, but we are originally from Vancouver Island, Canada. He’s a fun, cuddly, sometimes loud, blanket-loving little monster, and he makes anywhere feel like home.
I got Stewie in January 2022 when he was about 12 weeks old. He came from a breeder in Calgary and made his way to Victoria after getting his health check of approval. Stewie was so adorable and I was in love as soon as he arrived. He was teeny tiny and constantly squealing. In fact, one of his nicknames as a puppy was “Squeaker”.
As a puppy, he was quite mischievous and always wanted to be cuddled. I remember in the mornings when I was getting ready for work, he would sometimes jump up onto one of the houseplants, grab a mouthful of dirt, and spit it out on the floor. Perhaps he was retaliating and didn’t want me going to work, but my partner at the time worked from home, so from the start he always got plenty of attention. He loved (and still loves) destroying toys, chasing his ball, and is highly motivated by treats and food. Some things never change!
Now that Stewie is 4 and a half, he’s calmed down a little, but still has plenty of energy. Some of Stewie’s favourite things now are playing fetch, destroying toys, cuddling, napping, and lounging in the sun. He loves playing with other dachshunds, but he’s not the biggest fan of big dogs! At home in Victoria, there were monthly dachshund meetups that we always attended, but in Paris we haven’t come across many yet. We’re going home for a visit soon this summer, so I’m excited for us to go to one again.
Stewie also loves treats and is very food motivated. Some of his favourite snacks are fish, peanut butter, yogurt, eggs, fruits, and veggies. I have a dog cookbook that I’ve used a couple of times, and he’s loved the meals I’ve made so far. Stewie is a very loyal dog, he’s not too interested in strangers, but once he gets to know someone, he gets very excited when he sees them.
Stewie is my best pal. He’s been through major life transitions with me, including moving to Paris. I’ve had so much fun exploring Paris with him and travelling around France. He’s helped make it feel like home. Paris is fairly dog-friendly, so I’ve taken him exploring the city quite a bit. Some of our favourite spots are the Bois de Vincennes, the field l’esplanade des Invalides, and the many dog cafés in the city. I couldn’t imagine doing any of it without him by my side (or on my lap).
I started this blog as a creative outlet. I want to share bits and pieces of Stewie’s fun, cozy, adventurous life, as well as unique experiences that may be helpful to others, such as flying internationally or moving abroad with a pet. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy what’s to come!
